THE IMPORTANCE OF KAHRAMANMARAŞ

Kahramanmaraş ranking the 11th of Turkey with its 15.000 sqms area is one of the leading cities with its agricultural potential is located in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and at an access point of several regions. While Kahramanmaraş has the features of the Mediterranean climate, towns like Afşin, Elbistan and Göksun have the features of the Southern East Anatolia.

Kahramanmaraş is also one of Turkey’s most important cities in terms of water potential and it is available to grow several agricultural products in the region thanks to its wetlands and climate features.

Among the product cultivated in Kahramanmaraş are wheat, barley, pea, white beans, cotton, sun flowers, sugar beet, corn, lentil, red pepper, pistachio, olive,  betel nut, grape, cherry, apple, kiwi, quince, fig, pomegranate, tomato, eggplant, parsley, onion, garlic, peach, potato, pear, apricot and soya beans.

Stock farming activities are also developed in in Kahramanmaraş. The city has an intense population of sheep, cattle and goat and, poultry has recently developed too.

Stockbreeding activities are performed in extremely modern enterprises.

There are around 30 thousand bee hives in Kahramanmaraş and the honey of Binboğa is world widely known.

There are 8 dam lakes and 7 small lakes in Kahramanmaraş having a total of 20 rivers with a flow rate of 1000 liters/sec. Kahramanmaraş uses this potential and has 19 salmon enterprises. It is predicted that the fish cultivation in Kahramanmaraş is around 500 tons yearly and in case the water resources and potential is used efficiently it can reach up to 12.000 tons per year. Fishing contributes as a big potential in Kahramanmaraş.

One of the largest fish packaging plants of Turkey is also located in Kahramanmaraş.

The issue focused on recently in the agriculture industry by unions, associations and federations in the world is increasing agricultural product and production and making common decisions about fighting with hunger and other related issues.

Consequently, Kahramanmaraş is standing one step ahead as the city has already understood the importance of the issue and have several activities in that sense.  Both production variety and production method in the agricultural field, Kahramanmaraş is regarded as one of the leading cities in the future and will host such a great and important project.
